How can eating venison benefit my health? 27 January 2025 Venison: a dark and tender game meat that’s bursting with benefits… From sustainability to nutrition and flavour, it’s a fabulous addition to our fridges and freezers and is typically in season from late September until early May. However, venison can also be bought all year round, and you’ll find it in our Bromyard farm shop throughout the seasons. So! Let’s begin by answering one of the most important questions: What does venison taste like? (Any i-deer..?) If you were to ask venison lovers to describe its texture and taste, their answers will undoubtedly include words such as ‘earthy’ and ‘rich’. Some may also liken the flavour of venison to beef but with more of a deep, ‘gamey’-ness thanks to wild venison being free-roaming. Not only is it delicious, oh no! Venison is also good for you, and we’ve delved into some of the hows and whys below: 1. Venison is high in protein Venison has a natural, high quality protein content, making us feel fuller for longer, giving our immune systems a helping hand, and promoting muscle growth and repair – to name just a few more of the advantages of eating venison as part of our balanced diets. 2. Venison is a lean meat choice Proven to be lower in fat, saturated fats, cholesterol and calories in comparison to some other meats, venison is said to support our heart health. What’s more, venison contains healthy fatty acids such as Omega-3 which can lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation. 3. Venison is full of essential vitamins and minerals Venison is a game meat that continues giving back to bodies and boosting our brain functions by fuelling them with the essential vitamins and minerals they need, such as: • Vitamin B1, B2 and B3 – support our nervous system, in addition to playing other individual, important roles. • Vitamins B12 and iron – encourage the production of healthy red blood cells and in turn, reduce the risk of anaemia. Iron is also essential for making essential amino acids, which venison has an abundance of. • Zinc – strengthens our immune systems further, reducing the symptoms of, for example, the common cold, which is prevalent this time of the year. • The mineral Phosphorus – responsible for aiding our bones, kidneys, muscles, blood vessels and cells. Before we wrap up this blog, it’s also important to touch on how environmentally friendly venison is and that it’s one of the most sustainable meats you can buy. Read more information about it here from The British Deer Society.
